Case study Praxis

Background

Praxis is one of the largest and best known DIY chains in the Netherlands. Praxis comprises 138 retail outlets, including 28 megastores of which 11 have a garden centre. In addition to conventional DIY goods, Praxis customers are offered an extensive range in the field of interior decor. Praxis is part of the Maxeda DIY Group, the market leader in the Benelux. Praxis employees almost 5,000 people.

The challenge

Just as all the other retail chains within Maxeda, Praxis too is committed to saving 10% on power consumption year on year. This is something that has received a lot of thought in the last few years. Correspondingly, the TL-D 58 W has already been replaced with the TL-D eco 51 W, the TL-D 36 W with the TL-D eco 32 W and the TL-5 80 W with the TL-5 eco 73 W. The remaining 5% was easy for Praxis to achieve in a single swoop. With the latest low consumption MASTERColour CDM-TMW Elite (Medium Wattage) 210 W from Philips, it is possible – in combination with the right driver circuitry – to save up to 81 W per lamp in comparison to the existing HPI 250 W lamps. So lower wattage, with higher light output (> 90 Ra). This last point is not unimportant, says Henk Schurink, head of the properties and shop fitting department with Praxis. “This higher light output brings us even more into line with the store format, which demands a brighter, well laid-out store with a lot more light than our competitors.”

The solution

Following a successful pilot with this lamp in the Praxis store in Lelystad, a new store in Gorinchem and a refurbished store in Wychen have been provided with the MASTERColour CDM-TMW Elite. The shop interior looks fresher and brighter, and thanks to improved colour rendering, colour sensitive products like paint, wallpaper and flowers are shown off to their best advantage.

Benefits

There is no doubt in Schurink’s mind that Praxis has made a sound investment with the introduction of this lamp. “Just look at the facts,” he says, “each lamp consumes 81 Watts less than its predecessor. If you consider that an average lamp burns for 4,000 hours a year, we save around 40 euro per lamp annually.” Praxis plans to use the MASTERColour CDM-TMW Elite throughout its stores in the Netherlands, which amounts to about 8,000 lamps. This will deliver an annual saving of 400,000 euro. Schurink: “Above all, the lamps have a 50% longer life- span, significantly reducing the cost of lamp replacement”. And thanks to the higher light output, Schurink knows how he could save still more in the coming years. “We could look at reducing the number of lamps...”
